14th okt – 03:10 am
We went out to go for Porto, leaving Bayona at 03:10 in the night. No luck for the weather, 25 knots of wind dead ahead, swells about 2 to 3 meters – doubling the 8 hour old forecast… Probably bound to pick up even more. Went back around 04:45 for a 20 minute ride back down wind as we would have liked it to have been all day, all week for that matter. Eager to go to Lisbon! Back to bed now, 06:30 hours
15th okt – 08:00 am
We tried again today, sailing out at around 08:00 hours. Winds are going west but as soon as we leave the Ria (sort of a fjord / river with tides) it hits 25 knots south again. Swells are much longer today which makes it more comfortable (less uncomfortable really). There is a huge storm system over the whole north Atlantic, increasing and coming closer, we would like to make it to Porto in two days and then continue to Lisbon. But tacking (zig-zagging) up there with these headwinds would take over 50 miles (10 hours of sailing) and arriving with swells like this at night is no option. So we turned back again, probably to stay until Monday when the storm past by. Time to rent a car maybe!?
20th okt – 09:00 am
So, we waited out the storm, rented a car and had a good time inland where we picked up Kasias mom for the week in Porto. We visited the fort in Bayona (Spain) and the fort in Valença (Portugal). Also it was quite a sight to see the huge swells and waves coming in. Luckily we found a local biker bar where we did what sailors do while waiting. Drink rum (doubles for 2,50 euro!!) and eat burgers (7 euro burgers that feed three people!!).
Conditions are much better now, beautiful sunrise, lovely day at sea, sailing, reading, sleeping. I rode out a hangover as never before, downwind this time 😉
21th okt – 03:30 am
My watch starts at a lovely half past three in the night. Clear skies, the engines are running for already 10 hours or so. Hmmmmmmmm they say (there are two, we are on a catamaran). This is what I went out for!!! Wow wow wow!! I turned my two hour shift happily into a four hour one volunterily. I changed the autopilot every now and then to clear cargo vessels and fishing boats, changing the sails slightly (they keep the boat stable, also when the engines are running), listening to some tunes and drinking tea. It is the best, only sea, wind, stars and .. oh ja, the diesel engines
21th okt – 09:30 pm
Its dark outside now, time to go to bed as my watch starts in a few hours. The spinakker is up, we cruise downwind a good 7 knots now. Very nice and quiet after a day with barely no wind and constant engine noise. We saw a group of hundreds and hundreds of dolphins, part of whom where fishing. One shark at cruising speed just crossing in front of the boat. And land again after one full day at open sea. It’s wonderful, amazing really. Life is!
22th okt – 11:00 am
We arrived in Lisbon around 11 o’clock, beautiful city, flashbacks coming in since I been here before! Let’s go party party
Food! Yeah, you can eat those!
